Austria's Klimabonus scheme - what is it and how do I get it?

What is Austria's Kilmabonus scheme?

Basically all of your answers are on this official website: https://www.klimabonus.gv.at/en/ but the key information is summarised below.

Austria's Klimabonus scheme gives a payout to all people living in Austria which is funded through revenue generated by means of CO2 pricing. In other words, we pay higher prices for certain things to compensate for their environmental impact and to act as a disincentive to consumption. But we receive our share of the tax revenue raised back.

The Klimabonus was introduced in October 2022.

Who is entitled to receive the Klimabonus?

Everyone (regardless of age and citizenship) who has their primary residence (Hauptwohnsitz) in Austria for at least six months in the claim year will receive the Klimabonus. Non-Austrian citizens must hold legal resident status.

How much will I receive?

This is a little complicated and depends on where you live. Those who live in cities with excellent public transport receive less than those who live in the countryside. You can type your postcode (PLZ) into this tool to find out how much you will receive.

Under-18s receive half the amount that adults receive.

In 2024 there are 4 categories ranging from €145 to €290 per adult.

How and when will I receive the Klimabonus payout?

Annual Klimabonus payouts are made from the start of September and continue through to the following spring. Don't worry if you don't receive your payout immediately in September - they are processed in batches over 6 months.

Most people (tax payers, benefits recipients) will receive their payouts automatically. If your details are registered with the Finanzamt then you will either receive your payment directly into your bank account. If you are not sure if your details are registered then check and register here. If you are not registered with the Finanzamt you will receive the Klimabonus in the form of vouchers in the post.
