Child seats in taxis

Question: Does someone know if It is possible to order a taxi with a child seat? We need to drive to the airport very early and we are thinking of taking a taxi but our son would need a seat.

Answer: Taxis are exempt from the requirement that children travel in child seats. Therefore few taxis have them and you would be expected to bring your own if you want one.

This page from the ÖAMTC website makes the following recommendations:

  • Prebook your taxi well in advance;

  • Request a child seat at the time of book;

  • Don't forget to state the height and weight of the child when booking;

  • Integrated child seats are only recommended for occasional trips. They are a poor replacement for a proper child seat. It is important that the folding seat covers the required weight class - ask for the weight class when pre-ordering the taxi;

  • Shop around: some taxi or car rental companies offer child seats free of charge.
