Many families lack support in an emergency, with immigrant families especially vulnerable. This is where the wonderful Austria-wide KiB association comes in. Funded entirely by membership fees and donations, the association is there to provide emergency care when there is a sickness in the family.
Note: As at 27 January 2024 the KiB website was being redeveloped and had limited functionality. It still works but, for example, the FAQs were missing. We will check back and update this page in due course.
How does the emergency childcare work?
For example, you work full-time and are a single parent family with no local grandparents. What do you do when your child is sick for the day? You ring the 24-hour KiB phone number and they will organise an "emergency mum" ("Notfallmama") from the next day. For free. Whether you need child care for just a few hours, or a few days, it will be there and at no additional charge.
The same applies if it is you that is sick and can't care for your children.
What does it cost?
The cost of KiB is €16.50 per month January 2024), plus a one-off registration fee of €18 [this no longer seems to apply but we will check back to confirm], regardless of the size of your family.
To find our more about the KiB and their emergency childcare read their FAQs (your browser will translate the webpage into English).
