From 1 May 2025, tourists have been able to use public transport in Salzburg province for free due to a new mobility tax. This tax is set at 50 cents per night until 30 April 2027 when it will increase to €1.10. This tax is in addition to the existing tourist tax.
It is hoped that under the new scheme, traffic congestion will be reduced in the summer months, and extra funding will be generated to improve Salzburg's public transport infrastructure to the benefit of both tourists and locals.
Visitors staying in tourist accommodation will be given their public transport tickets at check-in, but you can also contact your accommodation provider in advance of arrival and complete a pre-check-in procedure to benefit from free transport the moment you arrive in Salzburg.
The tickets will be valid for all public transport in Salzburg province from long-distance trains to S-Bahn buses and including micro-transport (whatever that is - eBikes?). Tickets are NOT valid on the Festungsbahn train or on mountain cable cars in the province.
Tickets are also valid on Salzburg Verhehr public transport which leaves the province including:
Bus 150 to Bad Ischl
Buses 180 and 260 to Bad Reichenhall
Note that eligibility for the ticket requires visitors to stay in tourist accommodation such as hotels, hostels and campsites. Visitors staying privately with local residents will not be able to travel for free.
