Salzburg’s new S-bike scheme: how to rent an e-bike, what it costs and who rides free

Introduction

Getting to work, heading into town or exploring Salzburg on holiday? The city’s new S-bike scheme offers a convenient way to make short journeys by electric bike. And if you have a KlimaTicket Salzburg or KlimaTicket Österreich, the first 30 minutes of every ride are free.

S-bike is a joint project from the city, the province and Salzburg’s transport association, with Lime operating the service. Stations are located around the city centre, railway stations, university sites and main transport routes, making the scheme useful for everyday trips and sightseeing alike.

The rollout began in August 2026, and more than 600 bikes and 65 stations are in operation. Bikes can be borrowed around the clock and returned to a different S-bike station from the one where you started—handy for a one-way journey or connecting with a bus or train.

The e-bikes are electrically boosted and have a top speed of up to 25 km/h. They have adjustable saddles. 10% have child seats whilst most have rear baskets.

Check the wegfinder app for your nearest station.

How to rent and return a bike

Rentals are handled through the wegfinder app:

  1. Download wegfinder and add your account and payment details.

  2. Find a nearby S-bike station in the app.

  3. Scan the QR code on your chosen bike and start the rental. The bike unlocks automatically.

  4. When you finish, park at a designated S-bike return point.

  5. End the ride in the app and take the requested photograph of the parked bike.

Simply leaving the bike does not complete the return: make sure you finish the rental in the app.

The maximum rental period is four hours.

Incorrectly parked bikes incur a €30 charge.

Charges apply per started half-hour. For example, a 45-minute ride costs €6 at the standard rate or €1.50 with the eligible ticket benefit. Payment is taken automatically through the app.

The S-bike annual pass costs €100, offering regular users without an eligible KlimaTicket the same riding rates.

KlimaTicket holders: activate your free half-hour

The benefit covers all KlimaTicket Salzburg variants and KlimaTicket Österreich. Add your ticket in wegfinder before renting so the discount is applied automatically. You must also carry your physical KlimaTicket during the ride.

The free half-hour applies to each ride, rather than once per day. That makes the scheme particularly useful for short trips between home, work and public transport.

Note: The SUPER s’COOL-CARD does not qualify for the KlimaTicket discount. Holders pay the standard S-bike tariff.

Prices checked on 28 October 2026.
